Last February I started a new position as a school-wide Science teacher. My Science class, is on the wheel, and therefore offered to all grades 2nd through 5th. Due to the fact that we are a large school, it creates a huge planning/scheduling issue. Enter the Erin Condren Teacher Planner! </div>
<div align="center">
I have been looking at the ECTP for a couple of years and I have always wanted to try it. This year I decided to go ahead and pull the trigger. I ordered it on launch day, July 7th, and I should receive it within the next couple of weeks. To say that I am excited would be an understatement.</div>

<div align="center" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">A short time ago, I had the opportunity to attend a

Microsoft Power Point and Excel. Although I have used both of these programs
for years, I wanted to check-in to see if there was something that I could use to help make my presentations a
little "bigger" and a little "better". After all, we as
educators are ALWAYS searching for ways to improve our “game” and we love
learning. </span></div>
<div align="center" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">We are nothing less than

<div align="center" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">The focus of the Power Point session was to create
a "nonlinear" presentation. One
that puts the students in charge of learning and gives them the freedom to
explore and engage at their own pace and pleasure. I created this Scientific Method presentation to do just that. This may be used as a computer activity or a whole group presentation. Click the picture below if you would like to use it, enjoy. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

In my experience, it is very important to include a visual of every standard that is covered and I am so excited that I was able to find them. Hi Everyone!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, here we are winding down one of the seemingly shortest school years that I can remember. I am not sure if it is because I have come back to my "first love" MATH, but it seems this year has flown by. And to be honest, that is exactly how I like it to be. It has been said that if you love your job, you will never work a day in your life..........well this has been one of those years. I will not reflect upon those years that take 5 years off of your life. Um, no, I will not go there today. :-)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFfEN7pA7W1qD1kzCzpHdxeccY0FOMFIfrnxUI37AndSjHNJlrCk6gb_Ulbw5_OC__QokAfZP57b3AyjBQE9zrVoUk2qeOM6nldk8CPxtCsjyioCZwIHEZgYt1yaTynUSd9XfK3F-4GvJA/s1600/thCATD9SA7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFfEN7pA7W1qD1kzCzpHdxeccY0FOMFIfrnxUI37AndSjHNJlrCk6gb_Ulbw5_OC__QokAfZP57b3AyjBQE9zrVoUk2qeOM6nldk8CPxtCsjyioCZwIHEZgYt1yaTynUSd9XfK3F-4GvJA/s1600/thCATD9SA7.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
While, sitting at my desk this week I started looking around to try and pin point the things that make MY life as a teacher easier and more enjoyable. My precious home room students watched as I jumped up with my iPad and began taking pictures of random items in the room. (Bless their hearts, they are quite used to my antics and they completely take everything in stride.). Thinking back, to an "outsider" that may have seemed a little odd. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anyhow, I am going to share a non exhaustive list of </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A Few of My Favorite Things</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m3IoKbVLUTk/UYT2ksZM6YI/AAAAAAAAAQU/tZBKG3qxkM8/s1600/image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m3IoKbVLUTk/UYT2ksZM6YI/AAAAAAAAAQU/tZBKG3qxkM8/s320/image.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is where I keep ALLLLL of the student data that I accumulate through out the year. It is compact and easy to "grab and go" to our weekly data chats, parent conferences, etc. I picked this up over at Organized Classroom Blog. Simply stagger index cards in a hard backed plastic file case that clips on the side. The outside looks like this......</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0b73ZnTNibo/UYT56lCtPxI/AAAAAAAAARQ/K5HCk6w2nvM/s1600/image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0b73ZnTNibo/UYT56lCtPxI/AAAAAAAAARQ/K5HCk6w2nvM/s320/image.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And I obviously have no idea what it's called. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next................ someone please cue "music"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3yR3xNKhS_w/UYT2km2U3SI/AAAAAAAAAQM/cQVMknNwsjI/s1600/image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3yR3xNKhS_w/UYT2km2U3SI/AAAAAAAAAQM/cQVMknNwsjI/s320/image.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
..... we have the widely acclaimed Best PENCIL sharpener I have ever used. Click on the link to purchase yours. They are about $25 and well worth every dollar.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Two words, GET ONE!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); text-align: justify;">My next item I use weekly and I purchased it from Learning 4 Keeps over at her TPT store. It is a compilation of all 40 weeks of a school year. Each week has graphics that pertain to that month, holiday, etc. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); text-align: justify;">As you can see below, I list every assignment for every subject for the entire week as well as the common core standards that are covered by the assignments. There is also room for extra announcements in the bottom right hand corner. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); text-align: justify;">This item, alone, has saved me so much time and grief throughout the year. I have the students turn the previous week in, when I hand them their new one. They place the new one in their BEE binder to be signed by parents. When they turn them in, I keep them in their student folder to be used at parent/teacher conferences, etc. This particular copy, shown below, sits in a plexiglass frame on my desk at all times. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<span style="background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); text-align: justify;">NEW TEACHERS - must have, just click the picture below for the link :-)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Customizable-Homework-Sheets-with-Common-Core-section-40-in-all" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8ydYNBuhONI/UYT2lQVJOCI/AAAAAAAAAQ8/1rKbWXOQ_Nk/s320/image.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next, I have a picture of three little gift tubes that I purchased from the Dollar Tree. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I got this idea from my school buddies EM and AD. I use these for my Popsicle sticks, sharpened pencils, card games......the possibilities are endless. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mTi7FwMZACo/UYT2lvJaBTI/AAAAAAAAAQ4/qzz4oTFxXZg/s1600/image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mTi7FwMZACo/UYT2lvJaBTI/AAAAAAAAAQ4/qzz4oTFxXZg/s320/image.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: black;">Finally, </span>I created this last item (in about 5 minutes) as a portable (class to class) accountability tool. This rests in a large ziplock bag and is carried from class to class with my fifth graders. Each teacher can see what has been going on thus far in the day as well as make any adjustments that are needful during the next class. We have recess time at the end of the day and this tool is linked to that time and has been the most effective tool that we have used all year. :-)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-neymzw-Yecc/UYT2l0qlxPI/AAAAAAAAAQ0/dk8rBP0e9_w/s1600/image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-neymzw-Yecc/UYT2l0qlxPI/AAAAAAAAAQ0/dk8rBP0e9_w/s320/image.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next year I will try to make it a little more "cutsie" but I will surely make it a part of my classroom management.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0b73ZnTNibo/UYT56lCtPxI/AAAAAAAAARQ/K5HCk6w2nvM/s1600/image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Well, that is all for now. I will be looking around again today to see what else I may add to this list. If you have any comments or ideas about what helps your classroom run more smoothly, please feel free to send them my way. I would love to hear from you.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
I have a Melonhead created by melonheadzillustrating.blogspot.com.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I absolutely love it. It includes all of the little details that I gave her about my pug (Mr. Stubbs) to my reading glasses on the chain. I am very pleased with it and I would highly recommend her work to anyone that would like to go down in Melonheadz history. lol</div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;">Small group time, or "Teacher Time" </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">is a great opportunity</span></div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">for me to observe and evaluate how well the</span></div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">students have learned and how well they</span></div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">can perform the newly learned task.</span></div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span></div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">I found a different way for the students to work with me, at my desk, without using paper or workbooks, yet they can still show me their Math "skills".</span><br />
</div>
<div align="center">
<a href="http://s1064.beta.photobucket.com/user/working5_9math/library/" target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" height="300" src="http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u369/working5_9math/DSCN0431.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">At the beginning of the year we provided our students with a white 3-ring binder in which they keep everything that they do and need for 5th grade. It is sort of on the same lines as the BEE binder but with a much more Rad technique, of course. :-)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"> </span></div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: x-large;">Anyhow, I have the students bring their white binders and a dry erase marker to Teacher Time. As you know, division requires practice, practice.......and dare I say....practice.</span> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://s1064.beta.photobucket.com/user/working5_9math/library/" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" height="299" src="http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u369/working5_9math/div2.jpg" width="400" /></a><span style="font-size: large;">So, we practice together by writing on the BACK of the binders and yes, I even write on the back of mine. They could not get enough of it and even the most rambunctious students stayed on task and worked hard.</span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div align="center">
<a href="http://s1064.beta.photobucket.com/user/working5_9math/library/" target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" height="264" src="http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u369/working5_9math/DSCN0428.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">I am aware that I could have used the small white boards in the same manner but for some reason the students preferred their own binders. One student mentioned, "we can even do this at home". ...... Cha-Ching!!!! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Have a great weekend fellow bloggers!</span><br />

<span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">Hello everyone, after searching and scouring the internet for a division game with little to no luck, I decided that I would try to put one together myself. I wanted a game that included 2 digit divisors, middle to high complexity and that would line up with both 5th grade state assessments and </span><br />

<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: large;">If I have learned anything over the past 17 years of teaching, it has been how to conduct a stress free and worry free open house. As we left the building, last Tuesday evening promptly at 7:00 p.m., my team mate commented on how smoothly the meeting turned out to be. </span></div>
<div align="center">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFfEN7pA7W1qD1kzCzpHdxeccY0FOMFIfrnxUI37AndSjHNJlrCk6gb_Ulbw5_OC__QokAfZP57b3AyjBQE9zrVoUk2qeOM6nldk8CPxtCsjyioCZwIHEZgYt1yaTynUSd9XfK3F-4GvJA/s1600/thCATD9SA7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFfEN7pA7W1qD1kzCzpHdxeccY0FOMFIfrnxUI37AndSjHNJlrCk6gb_Ulbw5_OC__QokAfZP57b3AyjBQE9zrVoUk2qeOM6nldk8CPxtCsjyioCZwIHEZgYt1yaTynUSd9XfK3F-4GvJA/s1600/thCATD9SA7.jpg" /></a></div>
</div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: large;">Open house, in upper elementary, provides an opportunity to communicate the fifth grade policies and procedures to the parents. We want the parents to know and understand everything that is expected of their child. No guessing and no wondering...</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">So, I purchased a pre-made power point from TPT, cue music, and tweeked it to cover everything from the weekly homework log to the grading and discipline procedures. I also included pictures and explanations for every subject area including the standards and upcoming Common Core. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I tried to anticipate the questions that are usually asked 50 times and answer them once. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Did I mention that I LOVE my Smartboard and may have to retire if anything ever happens to it?</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Here it is..............sigh....</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Anyhow, around the room I also had three main stations: sign-in sheet, Fall Festival volunteer sheet and a calendar for parent/teacher conferences.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Side note, I set up a chart that showed our progress towards the $350 Scholastic order for the 7,000 bonus points......WHICH WE GOT BY THE WAY!!!!!! whoot....whoot (Thanks to Laura Candler for the how-to pack.)</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Finally, when the evening was finished we as teachers felt that we had successfully presented our information and the parents left seemingly comfortable about the upcoming year. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I have included a few pictures of my room. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Believe me when I say it is a work in progress. :-)</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> Here in North Florida there is a slight hint of leaves beginning to change and I am thrilled. I find myself saying, once again, that this is my FAVORITE time of the year. Since I say that about all seasons, I have decided that I love life and the changes that it brings. I am not one that would want it to be hot all the time or cold for that matter. I enjoy the progression from season to season. To commemorate the first day of Fall I hung my wreath (that I made) on my front door. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Tuesday we will be having open house and I have scoured Pinterest and my favorite Teachers Pay Teachers contributors to see if there is something that my students could make to show their parents. Considering this is last minute, of course, I needed something that would be simple yet meaningful to the students. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I always like to promote good character and a positive self awareness so I wanted to share an art project that I found over at Runde's Room that does just that. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> The title of the project is "I Am" and is a list of adjectives that describe the student. The result looks like this:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;">This week I decided to focus my post towards a subject that is loved by many and avoided by others. That is the subject of "Cooperative Learning." This week I read an article, written by a student, that basically described how much she disliked cooperative learning and how she felt that it put her grade at a disadvantage. Her mother is a well known, awesome blogger and I happened on her story through the blog. If you have not read it yet, you may want to check it out at <a href="http://www.minds-in-bloom.com/" target="_blank">Minds in Bloom</a>. </span><a href="http://www.minds-in-bloom.com/" target="_blank"></a></div>

<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: large;">After reading the post, as well as the many comments that followed, I found myself reviewing my methods for implementing cooperative learning within my classroom. </span></div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: large;">One of my blogging heros, <u>Laura Candler</u> commented on the post and stated that "</span> <span style="font-size: large;"><em>cooperative learning can be disastrous or wonderful depending on how it's implemented." </em></span><br />
<em><span style="font-size: large;"></span></em> </div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: large;">Could it be that some teachers are using the "throw and go" method where they throw the project out there and then go sit down at their desk? I feel that this lack of methodology can be a cop out from a teachers perspective at the expense of the learner.</span></div>
<h1 class="ic_article-title entry-title" style="text-align: center;">
Read about it:</h1>
<div align="center">
Roger T. and David W. Johnson (brothers, working together, <em>cooperatively</em>, at the University of Minnesota) stated in their article, Cooperative Learning, Two heads learn better than one, that </div>
<div align="center">
There is a difference between "having students work in a group" and <strong>structuring</strong> students to work cooperatively. A group of students sitting at the same table doing their own work, but free to talk with each other as they work, is not structured to be a cooperative group as there is no positive interdependence. </div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: large;">They go on to say that.........</span> </div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
There needs to be an accepted common goal on which the group will be rewarded for their efforts. In the same way, a group of students who have been assigned to do a report where only one student cares, does all the work and the others go along for a free ride, is not a cooperative group. A cooperative group has a sense of individual accountability that means that all students need to know the material or spell well for the group to be successful. Putting students into groups does not necessarily gain positive interdependence and/or individual accountability; <span style="font-size: large;">it has to be structured and managed by the teacher or professor.</span></div>
<div align="center">

<span style="font-size: large;"> Here I am!!!! Wow, the last few days have been crazzzzzzy around here. As I mentioned in my last post, I was asked to change from 5th grade Science to 5th grade Math and I have since been scurrying around trying to get my "stuff" together. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> First of all, I want to begin by saying I am LOVING teaching Math. It is like being reunited with an old friend......teacher friends that have walked into my class even notice the difference in my attitude and enthusiasm. Mental note, if you are feeling tired and weary.............change subjects or grades........mix it up a little, it will make a difference.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> I have accumulated (on Pinterest) a few Math foldables and ideas that I want to incorporate into my Math journals. I linked every pin to the original author or blog. So without further adieu:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.rundesroom.com/2012/06/math-journal-sundays-probability.html" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrArbw9erIenAwZVg4YHdgUQEJkZJmsH0g3u4Xwl-YtxYuO6ATzRGpykCl2wTcbmCJvnZVBRMWbewrVH5dcFYSyDwAKgIw2mzklhP8bqm7QMrE8C6WgI35w91KoHJ-Kgap4hFJ1iRQ9kLf/s1600/probability.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">This is a great idea that allows the student to create a spinner in their journal. They can use this spinner for probability, fractions and possibly games. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"></span> </div>
